VR Cat Games
I have a few cat games in my SteamVR library. Some of them are little more than a joke or simple game mechanic, others have a bit more going for them.
Kittypocalypse
A strategic tower defense game that featured attaching hordes of alien cats. Out of everything on the list, this was the game I spent the most time with. I’ve completed 12 out of 15 campaigns and will probably finish the rest later today. Each campaign has a main objective and some bonus objectives for an extra challenge on replays. I’ve never been into these types of games, but something about being able to see the entire level in VR makes it much more interesting to me. This game features a simple movement/scaling mechanic where you can pull the trigger on the left controller to move around. As you get closer to the ground, you shrink in size. It’s not as slick as the table movement in Demeo, but it’s fairly good for a VR game released in 2016.
Space Cats with Lasers
A fun and fast paced arcade shooter. When I first tried The Lab from Valve in 2017, one of the mini games that I wanted more of was Xortex, the spaceship powered arcade game. Space Cats with Lasers is a great alternative. Silly name and premise aside, this is a ton of fun. This includes in interesting teleport mechanic. While you can use two VR motion controllers, only one of them can fire at a time. You can teleport the cat back and forth between the controllers, allow you to dodge an incoming barrage or just quickly get a better position with the other hand.
Novelty Cat Games
A few more cat games to mention.
- Catlateral Damage – Be a cat. Knock stuff over. Cute game but the controls and physics are sub-par.
- Kitty Rescue – Richie’s Plank Experience, but with a kitty to rescue.
- Kitty Hawk – You are a Kitty. You are a Hawk. Flap your wings to fly. This is exhausting…
- Cat Sorter – Think “Mr. Potato Head” with cats, on an assembly line. I remember this being fun when I tried in on Vive. The controls don’t map well to the Quest controllers I’m using nowadays.
