PS VR 2 is fine I guess
I’m using it as a piece of workout equipment.
I got PS VR 2 when it launched in 2023 and almost immediately returned it. The controllers were not a good fit for me. I really didn’t give it another thought until this year. A couple of months ago I decided it was finally time to part with my Oculus/Meta headsets. I wrote about my reasons here. I don’t regret that decision.
The only thing I missed about the Quest was using it for exercise and fitness. I had built up a pretty solid routine in Supernatural. When I got rid of the headsets, I tired to replace that routine with other types of workouts. No matter what I tried, I just couldn’t stay motivated to get enough cardio. So I started thinking about getting a non-Meta headset for workouts only.
My VR PC is pretty old an buggy at this point, so I didn’t really consider any of those options. I already have a a PS5 and PlayStation dropped the price for PS VR 2 recently. So I decided to get one.
It arrived about week ago and I’ve used it for workouts 5 times.
- Bodycombat XR – My go to app for full body workouts with decent cardio. Not as good as Supernatural, but good enough to get me moving.
- Pistol Whip – Great for squats, lunges, etc. Also, some amazing music.
- Until You Fall – Great to workout my arms, loosen up my shoulders, and focus on reflexes.
Aside from using this as a workout device, I doubt I’ll do much else with it. I still don’t like the buttons on the controllers, but for workouts I don’t have to worry about that. As we start to see new XR devices over the next few years, I’d love to see a device that is completely optimized for fitness. Something light, easy to clean, simple interface without platform cruft.
I’m still within the return window for the PS VR 2, so I can’t say for sure if I’ll keep it. I’m leaning towards it though. On the days when I get a really intense cardio workout, I feel awesome for the rest of the day. That alone should be enough to keep my using it.
