Canvatorium Recap Six

By Joseph
Posted in Canvatorium, Technical
It’s been over a month since my last recap post, but I’ve continued making progress. Canvatorium is starting to serve its secondary function well: being the place where I try out ideas for other projects. Lab 027 This lab was a place where I learned a bit about Clones, Instances, and Thin Instances in Babylon…

Canvatorium Lab 027

By Joseph
Posted in Canvatorium, Technical
Poking around with Clones, Instances, and Thin Instances while testing out an idea. I never got around to working on the idea that caused me to investigate these features, I went to work on the Stoa labs instead. At some point I’ll come back to that… Still, rendering 5,200 box meshes using thin instances is…

Canvatorium Lab 030

By Joseph
Posted in Canvatorium, Technical
Adding water materials to the Stoa project resulted in an unacceptable degradation in performance. This is one of those times when I am a bit jealous of 3D graphics outside of the context of virtual reality. The Babylon JS Water Material looks fantastic in traditional 3D scenes but doesn’t look great in VR and leads…

Notes on Land’s End

By Joseph
Posted in Personal
Few VR games have surpassed the simple stylized beauty of Land’s End. Low Poly geometry, noise textures, colorful materials, water, and great lighting all contribute to making these bits feel like a place. I’ve played this on Go many times. It’s something to reach for when I want to clear my head or have something…

Notes on Red Matter

By Joseph
Posted in Personal
With the recent announcement of Red Matter 2, I decided to revisit this game on Quest. Red Matter was one of the first games I bought for the Oculus Quest in 2019. It’s made by the same developers who made Daedalus. I was impressed by it back then and I’m just as impressed now nearly…

Blogging in 3D?

By Joseph
Posted in Technical
I’m spending some time this weekend thinking about blogging in the context of WebXR and WebGL scenes. What would it look like for a blog post to contain a 3D scene? How about writing a series of posts with different versions of the same scene over time? How about working with assets that appear in…

I really like the way Threads posts look when you embed them in a website.

This was a short test recording I made with Adobe Podcast (beta as of Sep 2023).

    Recording:

    Unedited transcript:

Joseph: This is just a test of the new Adobe Podcast app. It’s in beta and I’ve been on the waiting list for a couple of months and I got the email this weekend. So I’m talking into my MacBook with no microphone or anything, just using the the built in MacBook Pro microphone. And I’m sitting on my couch not terribly close to it and talking pretty quietly at my normal tone and not necessarily holding still or trying to be quiet. So. Yeah. That’s where it put this thing through its paces and see what it can do with mouth sounds and background sound or whatever. But yeah, I’m just going to talk for about, I don’t know, five more seconds and then I’ll stop and see what it sounds

    Notes

    • Editing is a bit limited
    • Exports are large and would need to be mixed down
    • Chrome only
    • Beta for now, pricing unknown

    Pancakes and Space.

Pancakes = the 2D (normal) UI/UX work I do all day

Space = the 3D/VR work I tinker with

Apple Vision Pro = Pancakes IN Space
